Devin Daniels Quintet
African American Alto Saxophonist Devin Daniels has performed in many different configurations of bands in the jazz idiom since 2010. Hailing from Inglewood, California, Daniels has started playing saxophone in a program called Just Lovin’ Music Studios, led by pianist, Michelle Love. This program was a free program designed to give students of color a chance to rent out and learn a new instrument. After playing through middle school and Music has become his passion around the 10th grade after looking up and being inspired from one of the best performing years in jazz Alexander Hamilton High has seen (class of 2011). Since then, Daniels has worked to become one of the new and exciting voices in the modern jazz scene in Los Angeles, California. He has studied with some of the leading educators/players in America including Keisha Potter, Rusty Higgins, Josh Johnson, Shannon LeClaire, and George Garzone.
He landed a finalist spot in the YoungArts competition which chose six students in the United States. Devin was accepted into the Berklee College of Music as a Presidential Scholar which covered room and board for his four years at Berklee. He graduated with a B.M. in Professional Music and is now pursuing his master’s degree at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA. Between those years at Berklee and UCLA, he has been blessed with the opportunity to study abroad in Basel, Switzerland taking apart in the Focusyear program which is similar the Hancock Institute. In his first year at Berklee, Daniels has taken up producing electronic music in his downtime and since then has released an album on the Los Angeles based record label, Leaving Records joining a catalog with the likes of Knxwledge, Keifer, and Carlos Nino. A quotes that praises this album reads, “is fusion at its finest, beat music and jazz moving forward in lockstep.” He is releasing more content on the up and coming label, Preference records in 2022 along with his first jazz trio album. He has been greatly honored to share the stage with artists such as Carlos Nino, John Beasley, Herbie Hancock, Gerald Clayton, Jamael Dean, and Miguel Atwood Ferguson. He appears in numerous album recordings with artists such as the Pan African People’s Arkestra, Jamael Dean, Diego Gaeta with appearances on labels such as Stones Throw Records, Orenda Records, and Biophilia Records. Some of the venues Devin
has played at is the Porgy and Bess Club in Vienna, Austria, The Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC, The Blue Whale Jazz Club in Los Angeles, Walt Disney Hall, David Geffen Hall in New York, and the World Stage in Leimert Park. In his downtime, Devin enjoys to yo-yo, skateboard, read, and play video games.
